Mission and Vision

Story County Pheasants Forever (SCPF) is dedicated to conserving pheasants, quail, and other wildlife through habitat improvements, public awareness, education, and land management policies and programs.

Our History

1985

Founded

Story County Pheasants Forever Chapter was founded in 1985 by a band of dedicated conservationists.  Thier first meeting took place in a log cabin.  This was prior to the invention of color film.

2008

ED powell Wildlife area

The Ed Powell Wildlife Area offers approximately 17 acres of reconstructed prairie along the Prarie Rail Trail and is bisected by a small stream.

Powell was a longtime professor of Zoology at ISU, a founding member of the ISU Chapter of Pheasants Forever, and an Olav Smedal Award winner.

2011

Jennett Heritage Area

The 171-acre property boasts diverse plant and animal life featuring 25 acres of remnant prairie, two ponds, and two streams. A botanical survey of the site revealed 277 native species, including 65 native prairie species, such as silver-leafed scurf pea, smooth blue aster and marble seed. The 25 acres of remnant prairie at Jennett rest on steep slopes, which allows for a greater variety of prairie plants to thrive.

2018

Jordan wildlife area

Jordan Family Wildlife Area opens thanks to generous donations from Story County PF as well as many other organizations.

Eagle Scout Project

A.K. Nolin, Eagle Scout candidate from Ames, recently received $150 from Story County Pheasants Forever for her pollinator project. Nolin, a high school freshman from Ames, attended a SCPF board meeting, where she gave a short presentation on a pollinator habitat project focusing on Monarch butterflies. Nolin worked with the city of Ames to establish the 20’ x 20’ pollinator habitat garden along North Dakota Avenue. The habitat will serve as a place where people may observe and learn about pollinators and Iowa native prairies. Nolin plans to use the donation to purchase plant bulbs.
